Product description
Generally, the two uses of vermiculite are:
1. Germination of seeds (smaller sizes < 3 mm)
Vermiculite is good for germination as it retains moisture well, and you do not have to worry about the seedlings drying out. There is no need to pre-soak the vegetable seeds. You can then transplant them into the final pot when they are about 7 days old, by then, the first set of leaves (cotyledons) should have grown, and the roots should be long.
This method is recommended over direct planting into the soil / hydroponics system because:
You will be able to control the spacing between the plants so that they have ample space to grow.
As not all seeds will be viable no matter how fresh they are, you will not have empty or overcrowded spaces / net pots.
Vermiculite is a sterile medium, and hence seedlings that grow will be less likely to be affected by fungus or mold.
2. Added to potting soil (larger sizes > 3 mm)
Vermiculite added to potting soil to increase water and nutrient retention and is preferred to perlite for water-loving plants.
It aids in aerating the soil when mixed with soil as this prevents soil from clumping together in pots or recycled containers. This allows for roots to spread easier, and provides aeration to the roots, resulting in healthier, more robust plants.
