There is a ball float valve inside which allows water to flow until a specific level is reached. Once the water has reached this level, the float valve will be pushed up by the water due to buoyancy and will stop the flow of water.

When the water drops below the valve level, the float valve automatically fills your water tank, water tower, livestock and animal water drinker. Once it reaches the valve it will automatically stop filling so when the water reaches the internal float it will close.
