Due to the presence of sodium chloride, enzyme, tetraethylammonium chloride (TEAD), sodium percarbonate, and sodium carbonate in a washing machine cleaner can result in the formation of gaseous byproducts, such as carbon dioxide, upon exposure to air. This process can lead to an expansion of the packaging and the formation of a soapy texture, which is a normal occurrence and can be attributed to the aforementioned chemical reactions.
To prevent the packaging from bursting due to gas buildup, the manufacturer incorporated small openings at the side or bottom of the packaging. Although there may be some occasional spillage associated with this process, it is typically negligible and should not significantly affect the performance of the washing machine cleaner.
