In Chinese folklore, Black and White Impermanence () are deities in charge of escorting the spirits of the dead to the Underworld. Xie Bi'an () the white guard's name, directly translated means "Those who make amends will always be at peace". He calculates the duration of a person's life and is often depicted as a fair-skinned man wearing a white robe, a tall hat with an abacus. While Fan Wujiu () the black guard's name, directly translated means "Those who commit crimes will have no salvation". He carries a chain and a court order to take the soul of the deceased into the Underworld. White guard's tongue sticks out because he hung to death while black guard's face is dark from drowning to death.
They are very popular Gods of Wealth and devotees often pray to them asking for lucky lottery numbers. When encountered, they can appear as a malevolent deity granting wealth & luck to good people who are respectful to the Gods.
