The carbon brush of the generator is also called the brush, because its material is "carbon", so it is often called "carbon brush". The function of carbon brush is to provide external power (usually DC excitation current) of generator to rotor winding (excitation winding) through slip ring on collector ring. In this way, when the rotor rotates, the incoming DC current will continue to from  end of the rotor, thus making the generator rotate in  direction. The carbon brush is connected to the power supply to provide power for the rotor.
