The word tazkiyah an-Nafs can be meant as the purification of the soul. It is a process that needs to be passed to achieve the purpose of purification and cleaning. Imam al-Ghazali (505H) states that tazkiyah is a tarbiyah which means education. What we want to clean and educate here is our soul, which is an internal aspect. This is because the internal aspects of a person will affect the external and actions. That is what is called morals.
The origin of this word has to do with the duty of a Messenger sent by Allah Azza wa Jalla to mankind. Apart from the (reciting) and the ta'lim (teaching), then the main task of the apostle is tazkiyah (purifying), as Allah Almighty says in surah al-Baqarah verse 129 means:
"O our Lord, send them a Messenger among themselves, who will read to them the verses (Your Word) and teach them the contents of the Bible (the Qur'an) and the wisdom (as-Sunnah) and purify their (soul).
Tazkiyah through two processes: at-Takhalliyah (clearing) and at-Tahalliyah (adorn). The first process, vacuuming and removing all the bad traits of yourself, such as ripple, ugly, malice and so on. Next decorate yourself with virtuous qualities such as tawaduk, patience, remembering death and so on. As a Muslim, we must always clean and purify ourselves (Tazkiyah Annafs) on Setiap time and time. The Book of Tazkiyah An-Nafs compiled by Imam Sai'd Hawwa is very useful, understood and researched to practice it in our daily lives. As a human. We are often neglected and lazy and must always be reminded to purify our souls, increase our faith and fear Allah Almighty until we meet Him in a peaceful state of mutma'innah) and a safe heart (Qalb Salim).
