Cultivation Guide for Hydroponic Syngonium 'Four Seasons Lucky Wood' (Hydroponic Dracaena fragrans)
I. Preparations
(I) Container Selection
It is recommended to use a plastic base tray as the hydroponic container. The size of the container should be determined according to the actual size of the plant. Ensure that the container can accommodate the roots of the plant and provide enough space for the roots to stretch and grow. At the same time, the container needs to have a certain degree of stability to prevent the plant from toppling over.
(II) Water Treatment
For hydroponic cultivation, purified water is the best choice because it contains almost no impurities and harmful substances, which can provide a relatively pure growth environment for the plant. If tap water is used, since tap water contains chlorine, which may damage the plant's root system, the tap water should be placed in a clean container and left to stand for 1 - 2 days to allow the chlorine in the water to fully volatilize before use.
II. Hydroponic Method
(I) Cutting Treatment
Select a robust and pest-free stem section of Dracaena fragrans, cut it into an appropriate length, generally 10 - 15 centimeters is advisable. Each stem section should retain 2 - 3 leaves at the top to ensure that the plant can carry out photosynthesis. Soak the cut stem section in clean water for 1 - 2 hours to allow the cut end to fully absorb water, which is beneficial for subsequent rooting. Then, soak the base of the stem section in a rooting agent solution for 10 - 15 minutes. The rooting agent can stimulate the growth and development of the root system and improve the success rate of rooting.
(II) Fixing the Plant
Carefully insert the treated stem section into the prepared container, allowing the base to be immersed in water by 2 - 3 centimeters. To ensure the stability of the plant in the water, pebbles or ceramsite can be used for fixation. Gently place the pebbles or ceramsite around the stem section, but do not press too tightly to avoid affecting the respiration of the root system.
III. Maintenance Management
(I) Light Management
Dracaena fragrans prefers scattered light and is averse to strong direct sunlight. The plant can be placed in a place with bright scattered light indoors, such as a south-facing windowsill, where it can receive sufficient scattered light to meet the growth needs of the plant. However, in summer, when the sunlight is strong, shading should be provided for the plant to avoid leaf scorching caused by excessive exposure to direct sunlight. A sunshade net can be used for shading, or the plant can be moved to a place with relatively soft light.
(II) Temperature Control
The suitable growth temperature range for Dracaena fragrans is 20 - 28°C. Within this temperature range, the plant grows relatively fast, and its leaves are green and shiny. When the winter temperature drops below 10°C, the plant is prone to frost damage, and its growth will be inhibited or even stop. Therefore, insulation measures should be taken, such as moving the plant to a warm indoor place. When the summer temperature exceeds 32°C, the plant's growth will be inhibited. At this time, cooling measures should be taken, such as spraying water around the plant or moving it to a cool and ventilated place.
(III) Water Change Frequency
In the early stage of hydroponic cultivation, in order to ensure clean water quality and promote root growth, the water needs to be changed every 2 - 3 days. After the plant has successfully taken root, the water change interval can be appropriately extended to once a week. Each time you change the water, carefully take the plant out of the container, gently rinse the container and the root system with clean water to remove impurities and dirt attached to them. At the same time, carefully check the condition of the root system and cut off any rotted or blackened roots to prevent the spread of pathogens to other healthy roots.
(IV) Fertilization Method
After the plant has taken root, regular fertilization is required to provide sufficient nutrients. A diluted nutrient solution can be applied every 1 - 2 weeks. When fertilizing, first dilute the nutrient solution according to the instructions on the product label, and then slowly add the diluted nutrient solution to the water. Be careful not to over-fertilize, as this may cause fertilizer burn and damage the root system.
IV. Precautions
(I) Water Pollution Treatment
During the maintenance process, closely monitor the change in water quality. If the water becomes turbid, emits an odor, or algae appear, it indicates that the water quality has been polluted and the water needs to be changed promptly. Otherwise, if the plant is in a polluted water environment for a long time, the root system is prone to rot, which will affect the growth of the plant.
(II) Ventilation Conditions
Good ventilation is crucial for the growth of Dracaena fragrans. Place the plant in a well-ventilated place to ensure air circulation. If the maintenance environment is stuffy and humid, bacteria and fungi are likely to breed, leading to pests and diseases. The ventilation conditions can be improved by regularly opening windows for ventilation or using a fan.
(III) Pruning Management
Regularly pruning yellow and withered leaves is an important measure to maintain the plant's beauty and health. Yellow and withered leaves not only affect the ornamental effect but also consume the plant's nutrients. When yellow or withered leaves are found, they should be cut off promptly with scissors to reduce nutrient consumption and promote the growth of new leaves. Disinfect the scissors before pruning to avoid infecting the wound.
