Zhao Puchu, born November 5,1907 in Anqing, was a distinguished calligrapher, well-known social activist and great patriot. After 1938, he served as the director of the Shanghai Cultural Circle National Salvation Association, the secretary-general, the director of the Shelter Unit and the Standing Committee of the Refugee Committee of the Cilian Relief Theater in Shanghai, the deputy director of the Jingye homeless children's reformatory in Shanghai, and the village chief of the juvenile village in Shanghai. In 1949, he served as director-general of Shanghai Temporary Joint Relief Committee, Standing Committee and vice-chairman of China People's Committee for World Peace, and standing committee of asian-african Solidarity Committee. After 1980, he was a member of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference -CPPCCppcc) and a member of ShanghaigMunicipaliPeopleoplCongressress. First, second, third, fourth, fifth member of the National People's Congress. He died of illness in Beijing on May 21,2000, aged 93.
